News > Another Videogame Bill Proposed in NY

May 30, 2007

I live in New York, and frankly, the legislation here sometimes scares me.

The most recent instance of nightmarish stupidity to be spawned from my own state government comes from the obviously malfunctioning gray matter of Democratic Assemblyman Joseph Lentol.  Bill A08696 proposes that the sale of any game depicting "depraved violence and indecent images" to a minor be considered a Class E felony.

This means that any store clerk who performs the daily motion of selling the newest Resident Evil to a 17 year old would face 1 to 4 years in JAIL - the real JAIL...do not pass GO, do not collect $65.  Funny thing is, the ESRB "Mature" rating is for gamers 17 and up.

Absurd?  You betcha.

This proposal coming hot on the heels of a similar one made by Senator Andrew Lanza, I question not only the logic and intelligence of our governmental representatives, but also the underlying motives for such schemes.
