News > Arkanoid DS Will Come With A Knob

August 1, 2007

Arkanoid really needs no introduction.  Any gamer who has been at least halfway around the proverbial block has played the classic at some point in his or her gaming career, especially since it's seen a boatload of iterations on various platforms over the years.

According to Famitsu, though, the newest version of the game will be different.  Arriving in Japan this December, Arkanoid DS will come packaged with a special knob controller that plugs into the handheld's Game Boy Advance cartridge slot.  It will also feature 140 stages, as well as a special quest mode.

The knob idea is obviously an attempt to re-create the classic arcade gameplay experience, but somehow I don't see it working very well.  It seems to me that the knob will either need to be placed on a surface or held in both hands (leaving the DS sitting on...something) in order to function properly.  The knob must to be able to rotate independently from its base, unless of course it's got gyroscopic tech inside.  If that's the case, cool, but if not, then why put this game on a handheld device at all?
