News > Bigger Hard Drive for PS3?

April 18, 2007

According to an FCC filing made by Sony, an 80Gb model is at least planned, if not in production.  According to Sony comments, it's pretty much true.

First, Sony completely denied plans about the 8Gb model, which usually ends up meaning that there really ARE plans.  Then, Satoshi Fukuoka, a Sony Spokesperson had this to say:

"For users who vigorously store [games and other entertainment content] in the PS3, 20GB is probably going to be to small...Even 60Gb may not be big enough eventually."  He later added, "...addition and deletion [to the console specs] is quite possible."

Sony recently discontinued production of their 20Gb model in the US, and never even bothered to release it in Europe.  After Microsoft's announcement of the 120Gb Xbox 360, a PS3 with a comparable capacity may very well be the 20Gb model's replacement, and the Xbox Elite's competition.
