News > Boy Fights Off Burglars With Samurai Sword

June 12, 2007

Last Friday, a Florida teen who holds a brown belt in Karate used a katana to defend his home and belongings from a pair of burglars.

Damian Fernandez and his 15-year-old sister, Deanne were at home while their parents were working, when the house was invaded by two men looking to make a quick score.  The intrusion sent Deanne into hiding inside of her closet, and woke up Damian who had been napping.

After taking some jewelry, the thieves moved on to collect a PS3, but ran into a young man with a big blade.

"Once I saw him take off running back, I jumped off my [bunk] bed and I grabbed my sword … and I just waited for him," said Damian.

At that point, Damian slashed at the burglar's chest successfully, and sent him running.  the boy gave chase, and when the police arrived, the burglar was hiding behind a palm tree.  The other man was not found.

Big knives FTW!
