News > Capcom: PS3 Price-Cut Not Enough

July 12, 2007

Similar to Konami's sentiments, but a bit more muted, Capcom chief financial officer Kazuhiko Abe has expressed his doubts that the current PS3 price-cut will be enough to stimulate sales on the scale that Sony needs. Specifically, Abe had this to say:

The price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually.

The Sony Press Conference saw Tretton and Harrison still attempting to justify the inclusion of Blu-Ray into the system, a move that drove up per-unit costs. Unfortunately, hitting that vital price-point still seems to far outweigh the value of the inclusion of cutting-edge technology into the system, as the Wii continues to massively outsell the PS3. Is the argument that the PS3 is future proof actually of any value? Can a distant 3rd place console ever make a big comeback in the course of a single hardware generation? Time will tell.
