News > Clive Barker Talks About Jericho, Games as Art

June 27, 2007

Clive Barker, horror writer and the creative mind behind the new game Jericho for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC recently spoke at the Hollywood and Games conference in California. Among other things, Barker touched on Roger Ebert's pronouncement that games could never be art. The eloquent author had this to say:

It’s evident that Roger Ebert obviously had a very prejudiced vision of what the medium is, or more importantly, what it can be. That’s what annoys me, it seems too high-handed. There are a lot of very very smart people here in this room who are working to make these experiences extraordinary. We can debate what art is, we can debate it forever. But if the experience moves you in some way or other, even if it merely moves your bowels [laughter] then I think it’s worthy of some serious study.

As a writer of both novels and screenplays, Barker carries a lot of artistic weight around from other established media. It's refreshing to hear somebody weighing in in favor of the creative work being done in the interactive medium.
