News > HD Movie Player Sales Mostly Game Consoles

June 27, 2007

It looks like those individuals who watch HD are doing it on videogame consoles.  In the U.S., there have been more HD-capable game systems sold than standalone players - of either format.

According to Microsoft, 155,000 of the Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on have been sold up to this point.  The HD DVD Promotional Group has reported that, through April, 100,000 standalone units have made their way into customers' homes.

As for Blu-Ray, BusinessWeek reports that less than 100,000 standalone players have been sold, compared with the one million-plus Playstation 3 units that stand in living rooms across the country.

What does it all mean?  Just that dedicated video disc players are less valuable than multi-functional machines, and that consumers aren't ready to drop big bucks for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray without getting something extra.
