This controller is the work of three individuals from Spark Fun Electronics, and was on display at Maker Faire 2007.  It is five feet long, and works like a charm.  One player handles the d-pad, and another mans the face buttons in order to play.
 
Imagine setting this thing up in your living room.  It could serve as an artsy coffee table until the NES is whipped out, at which point the controller is revealed as a fully functional piece of electronics.  I know I'd be impressed.
