Microsoft Grants License To Machinima Makers

via Game | Life by Chris Kohler on Sep 05, 2007

MachinimaOn the eve of the release of Halo 3, a game whose "Save Films" option will make it even easier to create machinima, Microsoft has granted would-be directors a license to use their games as the basis for such films.

Of course, the majority of machinima films are already covered by the Fair Use doctrine; they don't need Microsoft's permission to exist. But Microsoft assures gamers that if they stay within the terms of the license, they'll get even more protection than Fair Use already gave them.

The reaction from the machinima community was initially skeptical, but they seem to be happy with Microsoft's gesture after discussing it with them. Read the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Machinima For Dummies blog for more.
