News > New Home Features Revealed

July 12, 2007

The magical land of Sony's Home is getting a few interesting upgrades, according to the company's resident giant, Phil Harrison.  The online network received a good deal of attention at yesterday's press conference, and seems to be a big part of Sony's future strategy, involving the integration of many different services.

The most notable points regarding Home are as follows:

  1. Home can now run via users' cell phones.  The full 3D display and navigation isn't there, but community features such as chat, and content upload and download are available.  Phil Harrison demonstrated how he could take a picture on his phone and then have it display in his personal space in the console version of Home.
  2. To go along with importing images from phones and videos from Singstar, players can also take photos inside the world of Home and export them directly to Sony's social networking site, or back to a cell phone.
  3. Players can launch PS3 games directly from inside of Home.  Friends can join up in the online world and jump into the game together, taken directly to the multiplayer portion of the software, as demonstrated by Harrison with Motorstorm.  One eventual goal is for developers to maintain lounges for players to assemble and play their games.
That's about all for Home, today.  The service is on track for a full release this fall.
