News > PSP Runs At 333 MHz With Firmware 3.50

June 23, 2007

Sony has confirmed that with the release of the PSP firmware 3.50, developers may now make use of the full 333 MHz clock speed of the handheld's processor.  This option was previously restricted, leaving the CPU stuck at 266 MHz, in what was likely an effort to increase battery life.

This is old hat for the homebrew community, of course.  They unlocked this capability long ago, allowing for better performance in some games.  The official release will not offer the same benefits as hacked versions, however; Sony has made it clear that the 333 MHz speed will only be available for new titles - not existing ones.

Looks like the PSP is gearing up for its inevitable redesign - unthrottled and ready to perform!
