News > PSP Slim To Have New Firmware, USB Charge
July 13, 2007
So just in case the physical design of the PSP Slim didn't impress you (it didn't impress me), maybe some of the new features made available by its internal hardware and new firmware will.
Do you remember plugging the old PSP into a USB slot, only to have it's battery STILL drain away? This happened even though USB has the ability to provide power to devices. Weak. The best a PSP owner could do was to use a USB cable that was split at the PSP end - one end to the USB port and one to the power port. Even this configuration didn't actually CHARGE the unit, it just kept it from losing charge.
With firmware version 3.60 and the PSP Slim, a normal USB cable will actually charge the unit.
Another big feature is UMD Cache, which uses the extra RAM of the PSP Slim to help games load faster.
Finally, the new firmware contains support for TV-out, which is also new to the PSP Slim.
