Right now, it's still too early to predict the outcome in the consumer battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Even though HD-DVD appears to be experiencing more success due to its earlier release date and less documented technical troubles, Blu-ray's secret weapon, PlayStation 3, waits in the wings.
Universal Studios, however, remains the only major studio holding out exclusive support for HD-DVD, remaining unconvinced about Blu-ray's future, according to statements picked up by itWire at the recent electronic designs trade show CEDIA EXPO 2006. Considering Kornblau's investment publically and financially into HD-DVD, the negativity is hardly surprising.
"Look at the blogs, look at the reviews by the early adopters and even look at the mainstream media -- HD DVD has maintained its first-to-market advantage and delivered on the promises of providing the best high definition image and sound quality at the best value for consumers today," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
If HD-DVD forges ahead, Universal will retain some bragging rights. If Blu-ray manages to gain substantial ground, however, do you really think the studio will ignore the money train?
