News > Virtual LARPing - FFVII in Second Life

May 6, 2007

Lots of things go on inside the virtual world of Second Life.  There are memorials, demonstrations and presidential campaigns - and now eLARPing.

A group of around 300 Second Life users are playing out Final Fantasy VII in a re-enactment of sorts, within the framework of the MMO.  The group and SL location are both called Midgar, and the re-enactment is more than just an event - it is an ongoing citizenship within the virtual...virtual storyline of the Square-Enix game.  Anyone wishing to take part chooses a faction from the game (SOLDIER or AVALANCHE) and does their part to make the imaginary world as real as possible.

As for having Square-Enix's blessing to move forward with this game-in-a-game, I am pretty sure nobody has received an official O.K. as of yet.  One administrative member had this to say:

"You wouldn't believe how many people are under the impression that Square is all cool with it... [who] seem to be under the impression that there was a kind of informal 'we won't sue, you guys rule' from Square."

"You guys rule" sounds good to me.  I hope that assumption is correct, too, because this whole things seems pretty awesome for its participants.
