News > Will The 80GB PS3 Have Inferior Backwards Compatibility?

July 10, 2007

How is it that Sony is now offering their new 80GB PS3 for the same price as the original 60GB version?  Well, it could be by removing some hardware.

Sony will reportedly be removing the "emotion engine" chip from the new model, in favor of utilizing software emulation for PS2 games.  What this means is that rather than featuring about 98% backwards-compatibility right out of the box, via hardware, the 80GB model will play far fewer "legacy" titles, and will require periodic software updates to improve support.

What it also means is that the current 60GB model could be phased out and replaced with emotion engine -less units.  Maybe now is the time to go pick up a 60 gigger.
