News > Xbox 360 Elite Not Totally Elite

April 2, 2007

Recent details about Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite reveal an upsetting fact for all the audiophiles out there.  The HDMI port that the machine comes equipped with will be HDMI 1.2, rather than the most up-to-date version 1.3.

This means that there will be no support for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio via the highly touted HDMI addition.  Additionally, the transfer rate in HDMI 1.2 is lower, and it does not output in "deep color."  The two latter differences don't make much of a difference at present, due to the inherent limitations of the maximum resolution, 1080p.

So, is the Xbox 360 as "elite" as Sony would have consumers believe the PS3 already is?  Well, the PS3 shipped with HDMI 1.3 right off the bat.
